How Pilates Can Help Your Frozen Shoulder

 What is a frozen shoulder?

The NHS website states, 'Frozen shoulder means your shoulder is painful and stiff for months, sometimes years.  It can be treated with shoulder exercises and painkillers'.

The basic treatment is to avoid what causes the pain and use painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol as needed. In some cases, the rest will heal the problem.

Some people may need GP prescribed pain relief and even steroid injections to resolve the frozen shoulder.

Your GP may also recommend some physiotherapy treatment.  The physiotherapist is likely to prescribe some exercises to strengthen and stretch the muscles in the shoulder.

Why would Pilates help a frozen shoulder?

Pilates is a type of exercise that was developed to correct your posture, develop your body uniformly, and restore physical vitality. The exercises you would do in a Pilates class will help strengthen and make your shoulder muscles more flexible. You should speak to your Pilates teacher first about your frozen shoulder so that they can give you appropriate exercises that do not damage the shoulder further.

Frozen Shoulder Case Study

Derek attends online Pilates classes at Jane Hamilton Pilates. When he started, he was recovering from a frozen shoulder, however, the improvements over time were becoming less. After talking through Derek's medical history, Jane advised starting with 2 beginners Pilates classes per week to build up his strength and flexibility slowly without any further strains or sprains.

After 6 months Derek was delighted to find that the mobility in his shoulder had progressed from around 70% to 90%.  However, he also noticed other improvements to his health that included improvements in mobility, core strength and posture.  Derek now attends the intermediate / advanced Pilates class. He can now work in his garden without getting any lower back issues and is back to playing golf for the first time in 3 years.
